Future Perfect Pivot
So I Did The Thing
I believe my days in the research field are numbered. After a spectacular 16 year career in the health sciences research field and between a number of my network retiring, public health appearing to be over, and my lack of a college degree- yep- it’s time to embark on the path I thought I’d take in 2014: Full time graphic design. Inhouse or freelance I don’t care. A few couldn’t-pass-up opportunities came my way in the private research industry 2018.
I’m grateful for all I learned at an opportunity I never in a million years thought I’d possibly have, let alone achieve. But I did achieve it. Despite the odds. And all I learned will be useful in the future. Leading up to that 2018 pivot I was mentored to choose a specialty and run with it. I did, and it was the right choice for the time and I don’t regret it. But- Cracks knuckles I’m a generalist. Always have been. Been doing design on the side, and in support of my larger projects with significantly different focuses, for 23 years.
Never lived the prescriptive life before. Feels sillier to believe the prescriptive life would be possible now- given, uh, <looks around> everything.
Time to make freelance design happen. After a few projects came my way in 2022 (which continue to this day), and a few conversations with peers and mentors; I realize yes- this is what I want. It’ll take me to make it happen.
i resign the fight; i am a statistical victim of the hypercommunication & fractured community age. i surrender to the process.
